Much of the reason for Leeds United having to spend the last two years in the Championship lies at Jesse Marsch’s door. The American was out of his depth, but Leeds are now back in the big time.
Victor Orta hired former Salzburg and New York Red Bulls manager Jesse Marsch following the decision to sack Marcelo Bielsa. But Marsch’s tactics, signings and bizarre press conferences proved too much.
By the time Leeds finally admitted their mistake and sacked Marsch, relegation was inevitable. Spanish boss Javi Gracia gave Leeds hope before losing to Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth heavily.
Leeds were relegated and only now, two years later on, have The Whites recovered and returned to the Premier League. Easter Monday saw Leeds beat Stoke with a 6-0 win, before Sheffield United lost.

Rene Maric reacts as Leeds United secure promotion on Monday
Following his exit from the club after Marsch’s sacking, assistant manager Rene Maric hinted to fans that he was unable to instill his ideas during his time at Elland Road. Suggesting, Marsch overruled him.
With Marsch earning criticism and taking the sacking poorly, Maric earned some praise for calling out Marsch publicly in the eyes of Leeds fans. Maric is currently working as Bayern Munich’s head of coaching.
Following promotion, Maric took to X: “Congratulations! A truly big, historic club with an amazing fanbase returning to where they belong. Great work by players & staff, what a tremendous season.”
What now for Leeds United ahead of crucial transfer window
Leeds have got to do something Marsch and Orta failed to do, and build a side capable of avoiding relegation from the Premier League to the Championship. Plenty of money will need to be spent.
Ipswich and Southampton spent more than £100m last summer but failed to stay up and Leeds will have to do the same, if not more. Adam Pope believes six new signings and more than £100m is needed.
Firstly, attempting to win the Championship and obtain 100 points will be Farke’s aim. But following that, Leeds face a crucial summer in which the club need avoid Southampton, Ipswich and Leicester’s failures.
