Illan Meslier is looking likely to stay at Leeds United this summer despite having been tipped as a likely departure earlier in the window.
That is according to Phil Hay of the Athletic, who provided an update on the future of Meslier as players continue to move through the exit door at an alarming rate around him.
It had widely been expected that Meslier would move on this summer after a dismal end to last season that saw him dropped for Leeds’ final four matches.
As per Hay, a move was seen as beneficial for all parties in order to hand him a fresh start elsewhere after an extremely difficult last couple of years for the 23-year-old.
However, Leeds have not yet received any bids for Meslier despite top clubs including Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United having been linked in years gone by.
Meslier now looks set to stay at Leeds
Leeds brought in a new experienced Championship goalkeeper in Karl Darlow last month, who had expected to come in as the club’s number one.
However, it is Meslier who has started the season as Daniel Farke’s first choice, with Hay suggesting the club’s plans for the Frenchman just haven’t materialised how they expected.
He said: “The one player who actually looks like staying at this stage, is Illan Meslier, the keeper that they absolutely planned to sell and make money on. It just hasn’t gone to plan, at this point.”
At the beginning of the summer, the likes of Tyler Adams, Jack Harrison and Wilfried Gnonto had been earmarked as players Leeds wanted to keep in the Championship.
However, it now feels like none of those three will still be here at the end of the window, with Bournemouth having agreed a deal for Adams, Harrison left for Everton and Gnonto refusing to play.
With Meslier having been deemed as someone they would be happy to let go earlier in the summer, it just shows things haven’t gone to plan at all.
