Graham Smyth says Leeds want to sign an ‘experienced international’ in key position this summer

Leeds United are keen on strengthening their midfield with an unnamed ‘experienced international’ this summer.

That is according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth, who reports Leeds are keen to add some real quality in possession to their engine room and have identified a player of this calibre.

As aforementioned, the identify of that potential target remains unclear at this stage but it is clearly a profile Leeds are lacking in their midfield currently.

Adam Forshaw was arguably Leeds’ best central midfielder on the ball last season but is yet to put pen-to-paper on a new contract, and could well leave.

Weston McKennie, meanwhile, has already departured and Marc Roca looks set to follow those two out of the exit door with a move to Real Betis imminent.

Leeds want to add experienced international to midfield this summer

At present, Tyler Adams’ is Leeds only midfielder with any sort of first team experience, though he is continuing to be linked with a move away.

What’s more, Adams’ quality quite evidently lays in how good he is off the ball, meaning Leeds are desperate for some quality ball players to help adapt to the system of Daniel Farke.

Both Darko Gyabi and Lewis Bate are excellent young talents with a keen eye for a pass, and while they will have a role to play this season, some experience is needed alongside them.

Midfield is arguably the area that requires the most work at Leeds this summer if Farke is to succeed at Elland Road, given how he likes his teams to play.

That became apparent very quickly against Manchester United with Leeds having tried but struggled to play through midfield in the first half of the 2-0 defeat in Oslo.
