Graham Smyth predicts another Leeds United player could score 20 goals this season, other than Joel Piroe

One big difference this season about Leeds United, is that the goals are being shared among the team compared to Daniel Farke’s first year. Leeds are not relying on one or two players.

Last term, a lot of hope was placed in the magic of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter. The form of the duo earned them Premier League moves last summer, alongside teen Archie Gray to Tottenham.

But last season, only seven player scored more than three Championship goals. Only six managed to get above six and two of those have gone. This season, nine players have already netted more than three.

Last time out, Joel Piroe matched last season’s tally of 14 goals, laying on double the amount of assists he did last term. The Dutchman is on course to score 20 goals, but Graham Smyth says another player could.

Graham Smyth says two Leeds players could reach 20 goals

With 14 games to go and Piroe scoring four goals in his last three, it is more than believable the £16m signing will go on to reach 20 goals. But Smyth reckons another Leeds player could join him on 20 goals.

Indeed, Smyth told the latest Inside Elland Road podcast that Dan James has every chance of reaching that figure: “I think he’s in with a shout of 20, just as much as Joel Piroe is, because of the form he’s in.

“He gets so many chances. Shooting relentlessly, more than anyone. He’s up there in the division for total shots, up there for shots on target, no-one at Leeds is shooting more outside the area, he backs himself.”

Leeds United’s Championship scorers, this season and last

As stated, Leeds have shared the goals more equally this season. The Yorkshire side are only 15 shy of the amount they netted last term, scoring 66 goals from last August until now at a rate of over two a game.

If they continue in that vein, Leeds will clock up north of 90 goals. The Yorkshire side and James are as Smyth puts it, “relentless” and will go on to win promotion with the same form, goals and relentlessness.

But it starts with Sunderland on Monday. A win will go a big way in the pursuit for promotion as Burnley managed only a 0-0 draw with Preston. Leeds have the chance to open up a seven-point gap on third.
