Brenden Aaronson has admitted himself recently that his career has gone downhill over the last 18 months – and Graeme Souness’ prediction on the Leeds United man could not have been more wrong.
Aaronson, 23, has struggled. Up until he joined Leeds, his career was going on an upward spike. The playmaker was on fire with Salzburg, a USA regular – and then he earned a £25m move to Elland Road.
Leeds were not alone in their pursuit of the ex-Philadelphia Union man. Bigger clubs wanted to sign Aaronson and there is clearly a player there. His first few games at Leeds had fans extremely excited.
But he has dropped off. As Leeds struggled, so did Aaronson. His lack of physicality became ever so obvious. He jumped ship and his relationship with Leeds fans is not a good one, given he left on loan.
He has struggled at Union Berlin to begin with – yet to score or lay on an assist in eight games, but has been sent off. It is the exact opposite of what Souness predicted on Aaronson back in November 2022.
“I like Aaronson. No surprises he was on the radar of some major clubs. An athlete, a flair player with a tremendous appetite for work. A good chance of being successful in our game,” Souness told The Mail.

There is a player in Aaronson and of all the players out on loan away from Elland Road, there is a debate to be had in keeping the American. Given, his raw ability, his potential and he is still only 23 years of age.
But, he needs to get going in Germany if he is to have any chance of either, winning his place back in our side – or, joining another team for next season. He has made a poor start, he needs a bit of confidence.
