Brenden Aaronson has told CBS Sports Golazo that the last year of his life has been “tough” after joining Leeds United, enduring a harsh season and suffering relegation – before going on loan to Union Berlin.
Aaronson, 22, was one of eight senior players to leave Elland Road using the relegation loan clauses in the summer despite being a major part of the reason why we were relegated in the first place. Germany.
He joined Union Berlin, where he initially started – but then picked up a red card and has since had to make do with sub outings. He did come on against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, earlier this month.
Aaronson was speaking after USA’s defeat to Germany – and he described how difficult he has had it over the past 12 months. But, he also spoke about remaining confident and trying to fight through it.
“It’s been a tough year. For most of my career it has been like this [points towards the sky]. Now, it is going like this [points downwards]. Football is ups and downs. Everyone that has played it, knows that.
“It is just about sticking in the game, believing in myself, staying confident. I just want to try and help the team, that’s all I want to do at the end of the day – that’s defending or attacking,” Aaronson told CBS.

When Leeds signed Aaronson – things looked exciting. A player that Jesse Marsch knew well, a player that looked excellent in the Champions League. League titles under his belt. Goals, assists, pace, skill.
But it just did not work out and given he cost £25m, plenty of criticism was sent to Aaronson and Leeds because of it. His career is going downhill slightly, it has plateaued. But, Aaronson can still make it work.
