Many would argue that Leeds United’s nemesis throughout Daniel Farke’s era as manager of the club is simply, playing away. A low block, when opponents take an early lead.
This season, we have seen Leeds struggle away from home to break teams down. Losses to Blackburn and Millwall, draws against Bristol City and Preston. Leeds have not found the formula to right that wrong.
But specifically to Daniel Farke, there is one man that has proven to be his nemesis ever since he arrived at Elland Road as the manager chosen to guide Leeds back into the Premier League – in John Eustace.
Farke has faced Eustace since three times since first standing in the Leeds dugout against Cardiff back in August 2023. On each occasion, Eustace has got the better of Farke with two different sides, winning 1-0.
John Eustace clearly has the measure of Daniel Farke at Leeds
Eustace seemingly knows how to beat a Farke side. Initially, a 1-0 win over a beleaguered Leeds side in August 2023 that Farke had not yet put together, while Eustace was in charge of Birmingham City.
Then, in April 2024, now-Ipswich star Sammie Szmodics scored for Blackburn as Eustace’s men drove a dagger into the hearts of Leeds fans in their late run for the top two and this season, another 1-0 loss.
Ao Tanaka endured his worst game for Leeds at Ewood Park and it saw the Japan star concede a first-half penalty. Todd Cantwell scored and Blackburn endured Leeds for the rest of the game to go and win 1-0.
Now, Daniel Farke’s nemesis could be off to the Premier League
According to TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Eustace’s form at Blackburn – which has seen the Lancashire side climb to fifth in the Championship – has attracted the interest of Wolves after they sacked Gary O’Neil.
Whether Eustace will be tempted or not remains to be seen. But secretly and behind closed doors, Farke will be delighted to see the back of Eustace at Championship level, especially with Blackburn coming up.
Having lost all three games against Blackburn, Leeds are scheduled to face Blackburn at Elland Road on New Year’s Day. But it could be a completely different proposition if it is a Blackburn without Eustace.
