Sunday afternoon saw the battle of two modern-day Leeds United favourites take place, as Georginio Rutter’s Brighton and Crysencio Summerville’s West Ham played out a 1-1 draw.
West Ham and Summerville have become instant rivals for Leeds this season, with the Hammers likely to be embroiled in a relegation battle with Leeds over the next six months. Leeds currently sit in 16th place.
Which former Leeds player would you have back, if you could pick one? Raphinha surely has to be up there💎
They have two more points than Summerville’s side after beating Chelsea and earning a late draw against Liverpool on Saturday night. Four crucial points that has taken Leeds from 18th place, to a dizzying 16th.
Leeds fans will have had an eye on proceedings at The Amex on Sunday, given West Ham could have pulled level with a win. Jarrod Bowen gave the Hammers the lead, and West Ham looked likely to win.

But Rutter had other ideas. Having failed to score all season, albeit starring for Brighton in their 3-0 win over Leeds in November, Rutter popped up in injury time to score an equaliser for the Seagulls.
His first goal of the season keeps West Ham in the relegation zone, and the two-point buffer between Leeds and the bottom three remains. All thanks to Rutter scoring an equaliser for Brighton on Sunday.
After the game, goalscorer Rutter posted a picture alongside Summerville in Leeds kit, and a picture from Sunday in which he was talking to Summerville outside of the dressing rooms following the 1-1 draw.

Rutter and Summerville Premier League numbers since Leeds exit
The summer of 2024 saw Leeds forced into some sales to maintain their PSR position. Archie Gray was the first, leaving Leeds to join Tottenham for £40m and allowing Leeds to sign Joe Rodon on a permanent.
Then, Summerville left for West Ham. Leeds were paid £25m, and will be owed £9m more in add-ons by West Ham. £5m of that is said to be performance-related add-ons, £4m when he wins a Netherlands cap.
Rutter and Summerville’s PL form since Leeds exit:
| Name | Club | PL games | PL goals | PL assists | Mins per G+A |
| Summerville | West Ham | 29 | 1 | 3 | 374.25 |
| Rutter | Brighton | 41 | 6 | 6 | 215.5 |
That summer, Leeds fans thought they had seen the end of the sales, with Glen Kamara going to Rennes as well. But then Brighton activated Rutter’s £40m release clause and the Frenchman left Elland Road.
Leeds have already faced both Rutter and Summerville this season, and will do so again in May 2026 with Brighton and West Ham among Leeds’ final fixtures of the 2025-26 season.
