Patrick Bamford’s hopes of securing a contract with Coventry have been clarified after the former Leeds United man was spotted training with the Championship side.
Leeds United released Patrick Bamford during the summer transfer window, as Daniel Farke deemed the striker to be surplus to requirements.
This ended a seven-year association between Bamford and Leeds, after he moved to the club in their first summer under Marcelo Bielsa.
Bamford has been without a club since he left Leeds during the summer and was linked with a surprise move to La Liga side Getafe, but this never materialised.
Now, Bamford’s hopes of earning a deal with Coventry have been explained after the ex-Leeds man was spotted in training with Frank Lampard’s side.

Patrick Bamford’s hopes of Coventry City deal explained
News that Bamford had been seen at Coventry City’s training ground was initially reported by the Telegraph’s Mike McGrath.
Now, a report in Coventry Live has attempted to clarify whether or not Bamford’s appearance in training with Lampard’s side is a potential precursor to a move to the Championship frontrunners.
According to the report, Lampard is simply allowing Bamford to train with Coventry as a favour to his former Chelsea teammate, dashing any hopes of an immediate return to football for the ex-Leeds man.
The report states: “Contrary to reports suggesting the Sky Blues’ boss is looking to strengthen his attacking options with the 32-year-old free agent, the arrangement is merely a case of Lampard doing the player a favour while he looks for another club.
Before adding: “Last season Lampard took Jamie Paterson in at Ryton where the Coventry-born forward trained with the club before earning a short-term contract in the New Year, but it’s understood there are no plans to do the same at this stage, and that it’s simply a case of Lampard helping Bamford out as he strives to stay fit ahead of his next move.”

Former Leeds United man’s goal-scoring record means he may be worth the risk
Although Coventry Live’s report appears to rule out Bamford’s hopes of securing a return to the Championship table-toppers, Bamford’s record means he would be an astute pick-up for a second-tier side.
Overall, Bamford has scored 134 goals in his career, according to FotMob, which includes 60 goals in 207 appearances for Leeds.
Patrick Bamford’s last five seasons:
- 2024/25 – 18 appearances, 0 goals
- 2023/24 – 36 appearances, 9 goals
- 2022/23 – 33 appearances, 6 goals
- 2021/22 – 10 appearances, 2 goals
- 2020/21 – 38 appearances, 17 goals
Although Bamford failed to find the net in the 2024/25 season, his opportunities were limited under Daniel Farke, as Dutch forward Joel Piroe fired Leeds to promotion.
However, Bamford still managed nine goals as he hit form in the second half of the 2023/24 season as Leeds chased promotion. With top-class strikers hard to come by, Bamford could still succeed for the right club.
