Four selection dilemmas Daniel Farke faces vs Southampton, including 32-year-old vs ‘underrated’ Leeds ace

Leeds United face arguably their biggest game of the season against Southampton Saturday.

It is the first time Leeds will be going up against one of their fellow relegated sides and a win at St. Mary’s would be a real statement of intent.

Leeds enter the match in good form having picked up seven points in six days last week, while also keeping a clean sheet in each of their last four matches.

Southampton, meanwhile, will be looking to put a barren four-match losing streak to an end with Russell Martin already under huge pressure.

Going into the game, Daniel Farke faces a number of selection dilemmas and we have taken a look at four of them.

Jamie Shackleton vs Luke Ayling

With Sam Byram having made the left-back spot his own and Djed Spence still out injured, it comes down to Shackleton and Ayling at right-back.

Ayling had started every league game up until the win over Watford with Shackleton having done his chances of starting against Southampton no harm with his performance.

Farke has already hailed Shackleton as extremely ‘underrated’ this season and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say Leeds looked better with him there than Ayling at the weekend.

Joe Rodon vs Liam Cooper

After recovering from injury, Cooper made his first start since the opening day last Saturday in place of the suspended Rodon.

Cooper looked solid on his return to the side but up until his harsh red card at Hull City, Rodon had started to get better and better.

Leeds’ defence would certainly look better balanced if Rodon was to return, bringing back a right and left footed partnership alongside Pascal Struijk.

Glen Kamara vs Archie Gray

Gray was finally handed a rest in the win over Watford having started every game in all competitions in his breakthrough campaign.

Kamara was the man chosen to replace him and he did his chances of starting at Southampton little harm with a very strong full debut.

Gray has been brilliant for Leeds so far this season but you can’t help feeling Kamara should get another chance from the start to build on his first start.

Jaidon Anthony vs Dan James

Both players enjoyed excellent afternoons against Watford, with James providing two assists and Anthony coming off the bench to score his first Leeds goal.

It is difficult to see Farke dropping James after his contribution last week but Anthony is now really pushing to be handed his full debut.

Not only did Anthony take his goal really well, but he also picked out some lovely passes and looked dangerous whenever he got the ball.
