Feyenoord now want to beat Leeds United in race to sign Premier League defender

Leeds United are targeting the Premier League loan market in a bid to add to their squad this month.

With it having been a very quiet transfer window on the whole so far, Leeds are looking to be patient in order to find the right players, but no one has come through the door as of yet.

Both full-back positions are arguably the most important for Leeds, with both Djed Spence and Luke Ayling having left the club, leaving them weaker than what they started the window.

Leeds have been linked to plenty of players so far this month, with Ben Johnson and Connor Roberts among those mentioned who could come in at right-back. However, Nottingham Forest’s Neco Williams is a player they really like.

According to Alan Nixon, though, Leeds are set to face competition from Dutch side Feyenoord for the 22-year-old, who are keen on signing him on loan for the rest of the season.

Nixon reports that Feyenoord – who won the 2022/23 Eredivisie title – are hopeful that Forest will let Williams leave on an initial loan, with a view to a permanent deal in the summer.

However, all of the noises coming from Leeds’ interest in Williams is that Forest are extremely reluctant to let him leave this month, with Nuno Espirito Santo seeing him as a key part of his plans.

Leeds were interested in Williams during the summer until they opted to pursue a deal for Spence, and had Steve Cooper still been in charge at Forest, it could’ve been a different story.

Back in November, Forest had been willing to loan Williams out, but he has been involved in all five of Nuno’s matches in charge so far.

Instead, Forest are more willing to offload fellow right-back Serge Aurier, leaving both Williams and Gonzalo Montiel to battle it out for that first choice spot.
