Saturday saw Sheffield United go above Leeds United to the top of the Championship table with The Whites playing on Monday – and Dominic Matteo has given his verdict on the race for promotion.
Sheffield United’s late 1-0 win over Luton was enough to take Chris Wilder’s side above Leeds in the race for the Championship title and automatic promotion to the Premier League, playing a game more.
Leeds host Sunderland on Monday night. The Whites will go into the game in excellent form after another win, beating Watford 4-0. Sunderland are unbeaten in eight, winning five times during that run of form.
Regis Le Bris was linked with Leeds before Daniel Farke took over at Elland Road, and the Frenchman has been excellent in what is his first season. Dominic Matteo gave his take on Leeds’ promotion chances.

Dominic Matteo shares if he still thinks Leeds will be promoted
With 14 games to go, Leeds have already clocked up 69 points. The Whites would only have to win half of their remaining games to reach the magical 90 points which normally wins Championship promotion.
Of course, Leeds won 90 points last season but became the first side to fail to go up with so many points. Adam Pope said eight more wins before Watford, and Matteo is just as confident in Leeds’ going up.
He told LUTV: “We’re flying but the others won’t go away. Sheffield United and obviously, Sunderland and Burnley, some good players and managers. But from our point of view and keep doing what we’re doing.
“I know it’s a cliche to say you’ve got to take each game as it comes. But when you get to this stage of the season, that’s what it’s all about,” Matteo continued, with the Leeds icon clearly confident they will go up.
How Leeds have fared against Sunderland in the last decade
It doesn’t make good reading for Leeds. Over the last decade, the two sides have only done battle on six occasions and one of those came in The FA Cup, the first of the last six times the two side have played.
| Date | Competition | Venue | Result | Leeds scorers |
| 4th January, 2015 | FA Cup | Stadium of Light | 1-0 loss | N/A |
| 19th August, 2017 | Championship | Stadium of Light | 2-0 win | Samu Saiz Stuart Dallas |
| 7th April, 2018 | Championship | Elland Road | 1-1 draw | Pablo Hernandez |
| 12th December, 2023 | Championship | Stadium of Light | 1-0 loss | N/A |
| 9th April, 2024 | Championship | Elland Road | 0-0 draw | N/A |
| 4th October, 2024 | Championship | Stadium of Light | 2-2 draw | Joel Piroe Junior Firpo |
Just one win in those six matches over the last 10 years, losing on two occasions and drawing three times. Of course, earlier this season, Leeds should have won only for Illan Meslier to throw the ball into the net.
But Leeds are incredibly good at home, in the best form they have been under since Farke became Leeds manager. If Leeds play as well as they have been recently, then The Whites will pick up three points.
