Dom Matteo tells Daniel Farke the tweak he needs to make for Leeds United to win promotion from Championship

Leeds United will be pleased to be back at Elland Road for their next two matches after another disappointing display on the road last time out.

Leeds were beaten 1-0 at Blackburn Rovers to make it 10 defeats in 32 away league matches under Daniel Farke since he was appointed back in the summer of 2023.

This season, Leeds have picked up nine more points at home than on the road despite having played the same number of games.

Leeds had the worst away record of the Championship’s top four last season and although that still meant it was among the best, it wasn’t good enough to pip those around them to promotion.

Eight of those 10 defeats on their travels under Farke have been by just the odd goal and pundit Sam Parkin believes Leeds’ travelling support is being ‘continually let down’ by the Whites boss’ lack of tactical flexibility.

Matteo tells Farke ‘tweak’ he needs to make at Leeds

Former Leeds defender Dominic Matteo was speaking to LUTV ahead of the game against Derby County this afternoon, where he spoke highly of the club’s home record.

Andy Hinchcliffe is among several pundits backing Leeds to pick up all three points against the Rams but these sort of home matches have been the bread and butter under Farke.

Victory today would only be a temporary reprieve from the problems away from Elland Road and Matteo believes Farke needs to make a ‘tweak’ to ensure Leeds are more solid on the road.

He said: “We know the fans at home have always been the best, they support the players massively. One defeat all season is incredible really because of how competitive the Championship is.

“I think as a player when you know the fans are with you, and know at home how strong you are, the way we play, that tempo, if we play with the right tempo every game, especially at home, we will go on and win the games.

“Start quickly, get on the front foot early and we’ve been very good at that. The fans get on board with that, the play we play with the pace and energy we have, no one would like to play us, especially at home.

“I think we need to tinker it a little bit away from home to become a bit more solid defensively, but I think we have got the quality to beat anyone at home. This month we have to be so consistent home and away to make sure we’re still in the hunt.”

Ethan Ampadu can be Leeds’ away turning point

Leeds have been buoyed by Ethan Ampadu‘s return to training this week and Farke was quick to make it clear he is his most important player.

Of course, Farke will not want to put too much pressure on Ampadu to return too quickly but he could actually be the key to turning Leeds’ away form around.

As shown by the table below, Leeds have picked up more points on the road this season with Ampadu in the side, despite having played double the number of matches without him.
