Leeds United picked up their most impressive result of the season with a 4-0 win over Ipswich Town today.
The Whites had entered the game 10 points adrift of their opponents but showed no signs of feeling the pressure as they raced into a 3-0 half-time lead thanks to goals from Pascal Struijk, Leif Davis (OG) and Crysencio Summerville.
Joel Piroe then rounded off the scoring in the second half with his ninth goal of the season, rounding off a counter-attack, an area which Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna says Leeds are the best in the league in.
But it is the role of Archie Gray that Sky Sports commentator Andy Hinchcliffe wanted to highlight on air, as it was him who started the move for Leeds’ fourth goal.
Gray was able to step in and intercept a pass out wide to Davis, and Hinchcliffe was left extremely impressed with his reading of the game to spot that pass before it was made.
Gray shines again at right-back
He said: “It all starts with Archie Gray, when the ball is played out to Leif Davis across the face of that Leeds defence, watch Archie Gray read the pass and step in. It’s poor from Burgess, but Gray reads it, steps in and then doesn’t panic. Piroe, fast feet and once again for Leeds a devastating finish.”
Gray was marking a winger that has been in decent form this season in Nathan Broadhead, and barely gave him a sniff out on the left, in what was another impressive performance at right-back.
The 17-year-old just seems to be growing into that role by the week, having also drawn praise from Leigh Bromby last week in Leeds’ 1-1 draw with Coventry City.
He has been receiving plaudits from numerous fans, pundits and teammates over the course of the season, and big clubs have already began circling ahead of January.
It will certainly be interesting to see what type of role Gray plays when Sam Byram is back fit again, with Djed Spence likely to revert back to right-back.
