Daniel Farke will break unwanted record if Leeds United beat Coventry City – history is against him

Leeds United will be keen to build on their strong form when they take on Coventry City on Wednesday and continue their push for promotion.

Leeds managed a 7-0 win over Cardiff City in their last game, extending the gap between themselves and third-placed Burnley to five points after the Clarets drew with Portsmouth.

Parker’s side have since reduced the gap to two points following their 1-0 victory against Oxford United.

The Whites are in a strong vein of form, with confidence about promotion from the Championship still high despite there being no signings made in the winter transfer window, after nothing came of Leeds’ pursuit of Cameron Archer.

Leeds do not have an easy task ahead of them, visiting a Coventry side that have themselves strung together a run of good results under new manager Frank Lampard, who is anything but popular in West Yorkshire.

Daniel Farke is yet to beat a Frank Lampard team

This will be the first meeting between Lampard and Daniel Farke as managers of their current teams, but the two have faced each other four times before. All meetings thus far came during Farke’s reign at Norwich City, facing Lampard twice at Derby County and twice at Chelsea.

In their first meeting, way back in 2018, Farke’s Norwich were denied a win at Pride Park after Derby scored a last-gasp equaliser. Since then, however, the German’s form against Lampard makes for bleak reading.

Lampard was appointed last year as the successor to long-serving manager Mark Robins, whose sacking was met with disdain by Coventry supporters.

It has not taken long, however, for things to click under Lampard, who has guided Coventry to four wins in their previous four games.

Leeds fans will be keen to see Lampard beaten

Lampard was a key figure in the Spygate scandal during Marcelo Bielsa’s reign as Leeds manager, something that hung over both United and Derby for as long as the pair were employed at the clubs.

Former Leeds technical director Victor Orta even joked about the ‘Spygate’ scandal following the club’s promotion to the Premier League in 2020.

It was not just the Argentine that he clashed with, however. Bielsa’s successor, Jesse Marsch, once referred to Lampard as “terrible” after a match against his Everton team, feeling that the Toffees had been blatant in their attempts to waste time towards the end of the game.

The match against Coventry will be anything but easy for Leeds, but it would be a gargantuan statement from the Whites if they come away from the game with three points.
