Daniel Farke tells ‘costly’ Leeds United player he should have scored a hat-trick against Coventry City

The story of Leeds United’s 2-0 win over Coventry City was that Daniel Farke’s men should have scored far more than the two goals they registered in the first half at the CBS Arena.

Joel Piroe opened the scoring with a tidy finish to score his 13th goal of the season after a mistake from Ellis Simms fell to Manor Solomon and he quickly found Piroe, who finished customarily with aplomb.

A second came when Jayden Bogle picked the ball up from Ao Tanaka deep, and went on a mazy run. The defender found himself overrunning the ball in the Coventry box, only for it to fall back to him and score.

A fourth goal of the season in Leeds colours for Bogle, who continues to shine. But Leeds missed many other chances having netted seven against Cardiff, with Piroe and Dan James most guilty of missed shots.

Daniel Farke says Joel Piroe needs to show more consistency

Piroe remains Leeds’ top scorer, having a hand in 18 goals in 31 league appearances for Leeds. A super tally and even better considering Piroe has only started 21 times, playing less than 2000 minutes.

But Daniel Farke has high standards and said Piroe should have 15 goals and five assists after the win at Coventry, rather than 13 goals and five assists. He believes then, that Piroe should have netted a hat-trick.

“Sometimes I can be over critical but I know how costly it can be if not efficient in this league. Goal tally of Piroe should be 15 after this game not 13 – need to show a bit more consistency after the goal,” he said.

How is Joel Piroe performing compared to his XG?

So, Piroe has 13 goals and five assists so far. Already, Piroe is just one goal behind last season’s tally of 14 goals, while he has already eclipsed last season’s assist tally, laying on just three during the 23-24 season.

There is no doubt that Piroe has improved this season. Previously, Farke said Piroe is the Championship’s best finisher but such are the demands of the perfectionist manager, he still wants more consistency.

Interestingly, Piroe is far out-performing his XG [expected goals] and XA [expected assists], as seen above. There are a contingent of Leeds fans that want Mateo Joseph to start, but Piroe deserves more credit.
