Leeds United secured their third Championship win of the season on Saturday away at Cardiff City thanks to goals from Largie Ramazani and Joel Piroe, but Daniel Farke was left disappointed.
Leeds came into the match having suffered defeat last time out to Scott Parker’s Burnley at Elland Road. But, they put it right with a comfortable win over Cardiff, who went down to 10 men on 23 minutes.
With Wilfried Gnonto looking as though he was through on goal, the Italian was stopped in his tracks by Joel Bagan. A straight red card was awarded to the bemusement of the Cardiff players and supporters.
But it saw Leeds cruise to a third 2-0 win of the season without really exceeding second gear. Ramazani got his first in Leeds colours with a superb left-footed finish before Piroe came off the bench to score.
Farke explains why he was frustrated with Leeds on Saturday
One thing has been a constant throughout the season for Leeds and it is missed chances. The opening day saw Leeds hit the woodwork three times and Brenden Aaronson miss a sitter to beat Portsmouth.
Sheffield Wednesday and Hull saw Leeds win, but both games could have been more than 2-0 and then against Burnley, Leeds should have scored. On Saturday, Pascal Struijk missed a penalty in the second 45.
Ramazani also missed a golden chance to score a second. Farke said he was disappointed his Leeds side did not put the game beyond doubt before they did: “We should have buried the game earlier.”
“Our conversion rate was the only thing I could criticise. You can always concede out of nothing in this league, so the conversion rate was the issue for me. We will keep working on this,” Farke continued.
Another away win though fits with Martin Keown’s advice
Following the defeat to Burnley, Keown explained how clubs will go to Elland Road as if it is their cup final this season. Burnley’s Zian Flemming said that Leeds away is the toughest fixture of the season’s calendar.
So, if clubs are going to make it tough for Leeds at home, then Leeds will have to become experts away from home. Something Keown said his Aston Villa side targeted when he was promoted in 1987-88.
Leeds have played three league games away from home so far, defeating Sheffield Wednesday and now Cardiff while picking up a 0-0 draw at West Brom. A solid record and something Leeds must continue.
