Daniel Farke shares injury update on Junior Firpo after limping off in Leeds United win at Elland Road

Junior Firpo was forced off injured in the first half of Leeds United’s win over Derby County having actually been a doubt this week.

Firpo picked up a knock to his foot in training on Wednesday but was passed fit to make the starting XI after seemingly coming through the final session without any issues.

However, while it is always easier with hindsight, perhaps Firpo should’ve been given a rest as he limped off injured inside the opening 20 minutes.

Thankfully Leeds were able to cope pretty comfortable in his absence as replacement Max Wober came on and netted his first goal for the club in a 2-0 win.

Farke had been tempted to start Wober anyway but the Austrian international was called into action pretty early on and staked a claim for a more regular starting role.

Farke shares Firpo injury update after Leeds win

It has been a while since Firpo missed a prolonged period of matches due to injury but it looks like he could be set for a spell on the sidelines at the worst possible time.

In fact, Firpo had pretty much got through the entire calendar year of 2024 without any injuries until today’s game against Derby County, very much a first for him in his Leeds career.

However, it is always a worry whenever a player goes down without anyone around him and that was the case for Firpo at Elland Road.

Firpo was seen clutching his hamstring while receiving treatment from Leeds’ medical staff and Farke has confirmed post-match that is where he picked up the problem.

The Leeds boss has also suggested it is almost certain Firpo will be out of Tuesday night’s huge match with Middlesbrough.

Firpo suspension has ruined his Leeds momentum

As mentioned, Firpo had managed to find a real rhythm at Leeds for probably the first time in his career in West Yorkshire in 2024.

However, the three-match ban Firpo served recently after an incident in the defeat at Millwall last month seems to have halted his momentum.

Firpo was poor on his return to the side at Blackburn Rovers last week with it clear his match sharpness was not at the same level it had been previously.

And that has been shown by the fact he has gone off injured in today’s game. Hopefully he isn’t out for too long.
