Daniel Farke shares his thoughts on Brenden Aaronson’s start to the season after controversial Leeds United return

Leeds United have a number of in-form players on their books right now, going into Wednesday’s clash against Millwall at The Den with Neil Harris’ side eyeing a fourth win in a row.

The Whites themselves are in good form. Leeds are unbeaten in seven matches this season, coming into the game after arguably their easiest win of the season thanks to Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth tactics.

Goals from Dan James, Joel Piroe and Brenden Aaronson leaves Leeds in second, with Sunderland and Burnley dropping points over the weekend. But on Wednesday night, a different animal awaits Leeds.

Millwall are a rival and have been over the last few years. Neil Harris has told his Millwall players that Burnley was just a warm-up for Leeds on Wednesday night – but Leeds will still be favourites to win.

That is largely due to the quality and the form of some individuals in this Leeds side. Wilfried Gnonto has that main-man aura about him, James and Piroe are scoring goals and then defence is incredibly solid.

Eight clean sheets in 13 despite Junior Firpo and Jayden Bogle missing a game apiece in the last two due to suspension. But it is all knitted together by playmaker Aaronson, the USA star in his best Leeds form.

Farke was asked about Aaronson on Tuesday: “Excellent so far. It’s good when a player has a little bit extra motivation or bad conscience. His last season in a Leeds shirt was not good, wanted to prove his worth.

“I got this feeling in our first conversations. There are still a few bits in his game we can improve. But I love his work rate, his work against the ball, his ability set-up players with assists. ability to score goals.

“So far, I have been pleased and in the last game I was happy to give him some rest. Brenden works so hard for the team, it’s not just his end product,” Farke said, when discussing Aaronson’s form this term.

“But what he invests in making us compact and in the pressing, and to sacrifice himself to stretch opponents and then a teammate gets the credit. He has played an excellent season so far,” Farke added.

Aaronson is scoring goals and is involved in everything. Farke previously said he is capable of passes Zinedine Zidane used to produce, with Aaronson netting his fourth goal of the season on Saturday.

In his previous two seasons, albeit in the top tiers of English and German football, Aaronson has had a hand in four goals. This season, Aaronson has already produced five involvements in just 14 appearances.

Leeds will be hoping that form continues on Wednesday night in London when the Whites take on Harris’ side. Physicality will be a factor, and it might be that it is the kind of game that Aaronson may struggle.
