Daniel Farke isn’t quite so sure Chris Wilder’s weekend comments on Leeds United being ‘miles ahead’ of his Sheffield United side are entirely accurate.
Wilder made the claim on Leeds after Sheffield United’s 2-2 draw at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday in which a point was enough to move them back to the top of the Championship.
The Blades have lost just twice across their opening 19 league matches and would be further clear in first but for a two-point deduction before the season had even started.
It would be fair to say things were looking a little messy at Bramall Lane following their relegation from the Premier League in May, but some savvy recruitment alongside keeping the likes of Gustavo Hamer, Anel Ahmedhodzic and Vini Souza was always going to have them in the promotion mix.
As such, Wilder’s comments on Leeds are a little odd considering the players that departed Elland Road in the summer, and how little was spent on replacing them.

Farke hits back at Chris Wilder with Ao Tanaka claim
Over £100 million was raked in through the sales of Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville, Glen Kamara and Georginio Rutter.
However, due to the constraints of PSR, Leeds spent a fraction of that amount on rebuilding the squad, with Jayden Bogle, Ao Tanaka, Joe Rothwell, Largie Ramazani and Manor Solomon seen as their replacements.
Tanaka and Ramazani in particular are examples of Leeds having to think a little outside of the box, with both arriving from second tier clubs in other European leagues.
Speaking in his pre-Middlesbrough press conference in response to Wilder’s ‘miles ahead’ claim about Leeds, Farke used the examples of both Tanaka and Ramazani as to why it isn’t the case.
Farke says they were two players no other club was willing to take a chance on other than Leeds in the summer, meaning their success was never a complete guarantee.
He said: “Ao Tanaka we get him from the second tier in Germany. At least no other Premier League club, Bundesliga club or Championship club saw what we saw in him. Largie Ramazani was relegated last season in Spain and it seems like everyone in England has forgotten about him.”

Where Leeds and Sheffield United signed players from in the summer
| Leeds United | Sheffield United |
| Joe Rodon – Tottenham | Jamie Shackleton – Leeds |
| Alex Cairns – Fleetwood Town | Callum O’Hare – Coventry City |
| Joe Rothwell – Bournemouth | Kieffer Moore – Bournemouth |
| Jayden Bogle – Sheffield United | Harrison Burrows – Peterborough |
| Largie Ramazani – Almeria | Jesurun Rak-Sakyi – Crystal Palace |
| Manor Solomon – Tottenham | Michael Cooper – Plymouth Argyle |
| Ao Tanaka – Fortuna Dusseldorf | Sam McCallum – Norwich City |
| Isaac Schmidt – FC St. Gallen | Harry Souttar – Leicester City |
| Alfie Gilchrist – Chelsea | |
| Tyrese Campbell – Stoke City |
As shown by the table above, Sheffield United went considerably more tried and tested at this level than Leeds with their summer signings.
Only Harrison Burrows – a player who has played Championship football before – wasn’t signed from a team in the top two divisions of English football by Wilder.
In contrast, three of Leeds’ signings came from abroad and were therefore far riskier. Only Bogle, Rodon and Rothwell came in as players with Championship know-how. It’s very much an even playing field.
