Daniel Farke predicts where Leeds United would finish in the Bundesliga against Germany’s elite

Leeds United are fighting for promotion to the Premier League with seven games left to play in their bid to hold onto a place in the top two – but what if they were promoted into the Bundesliga?

Well, Daniel Farke has had his say. A man that is probably up there with the best-placed people to tell you if an English side could compete in Germany or vice versa, having worked and had success in both.

Leeds currently sit in second place and ace a tricky away test at Luton Town on Saturday, who do sit in 23rd position but are fighting for their lives and have secured an impressive 10 points in the last five.

The Premier League is the holy grail for Leeds, Sheffield United and Burnley as the trio look to avoid the play-offs. But Farke thinks that if Leeds were promoted into the Bundesliga, they would be “competitive”.

Daniel Farke says if Leeds would be competitive in the Bundesliga

Farke was told the total value of the Leeds squad is in a similar ball-park to that of his old side Gladbach, Georginio Rutter’s old side Hoffenheim and a team that tried to sign Willy Gnonto – in Freiburg.

He was asked how Leeds would get on if they were promoted into the Bundesliga, against teams like Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund. Farke told TransferMarkt Leeds would do okay.

“In the Championship, there are more games and a different intensity, whereas the Bundesliga has quality and breadth. The key would be how quickly the team could adapt. We would definitely be competitive.”

Leeds proved they are above Germany’s second tier last summer

During pre-season in 2024, Farke took his Leeds side to his home nation of Germany and the squad had two pre-season friendlies against two of Germany’s biggest clubs – that are currently in the second tier.

Leeds dispatched of both Hannover and Schalke with ease, despite being behind the German double in their pre-season development. The Whites eased to victory, even if they still had Rutter at their disposal.

Leeds are certainly of the quality of a Bundesliga side, given Max Wober started for Gladbach last term and is a fringe player here. But it would certainly be bottom-half, rather than in the top nine.
