Leeds player would have ‘loved’ to join German side in summer, even agreed personal terms

German newspaper Bild claim that Willy Gnonto would have “loved” to have joined Bundesliga side Freiburg in the summer – and even agreed personal terms. But Leeds priced Gnonto out of a move.

Gnonto, 19, remained at Leeds in the summer despite refusing to play for three games and being the subject of interest from the likes of Everton, other Premier League clubs, Serie A sides an Freiburg.

In what was a bit of a drawn out chess match, Daniel Farke came out on top – with Gnonto returning to the fold and the deadline passing, no clubs managing to reach our asking price. Luis Sinisterra did go.

Now, following the retention of the Italy wonderkid, BILD report that Freiburg were interested and the player would have loved to join the German side. He even agreed personal terms over a possible move.

Indeed, Freiburg saw Gnonto as a dream signing – as per the report. But, Leeds wanted much more than Freiburg were willing to pay – just £17m. Ultimately, a move that was never going to happen this summer.

Freiburg would have been a good move for Gnonto, to be fair. An ambitious side, with a faith in youth. Gnonto would have easily started for the German side – and, they are in the Europa League this season.

So, Gnonto would have been playing top-tier football, starting week in, week out for a club that is also in the European group stage. But instead, he is at Leeds and will remain in Yorkshire until January, at least.
