Speaking ahead of Wednesday night’s clash against his old side Norwich City, Daniel Farke named the three Leeds United players he sees as the future of the club – including striker Mateo Joseph.

Spain-born England U20 star Joseph, 20, penned a new deal at Elland Road this month despite being some way away from the starting line-up. The striker has played in six of our last nine league games.

But Leeds chose to hand Joseph a new contract until the summer of 2028. It comes after the new deal for Archie Gray, which will also take the Yorkshire-born talent up until the summer, four years from now.

The next in line, could be Willy Gnonto. But he is yet to put pen to paper. One young player that did last summer was Ethan Ampadu and while many forget he is still only 23 – he is still at the start of his career.

Farke was asked about the new deal for Joseph and he named the striker – along with Ampadu and Gray – as the future of Leeds. He also took the time to congratulate Joseph for the new contract at Leeds.

“From my side, official congratulations for Mateo. Good news for him and for us. A sign of what we want to build here. The long-term contracts for some of our young players is something we want to achieve.

“Gray, Ampadu, Joseph – we believe these players will be the future of Leeds United. Not reached their peak, but are running up the hill than down it. With Mateo, 100% convinced he has lots of potential.”

There is no doubting that Gray and Ampadu are the future of this side. Joseph has the potential to be but is yet to be given the chance to show it. There are others that can be added to that list of players.

Gnonto, if he wants to stay – and signing a new deal could be a sign he is ready to knuckle down and fight. Cree Summerville, another. Joe Rodon if he signs permanently. Illan Meslier if he stays long term.
