Leeds United return to Elland Road on Saturday, where they welcome a currently managerless Oxford United side.

Leeds United are back on home soil on Saturday where they’ll look to make amends for their poor performance and disappoint result against Preston last time out.

Daniel Farke’s side needed a win to keep the heat on Sheffield United in 1st. Instead, Leeds had to rescue a late point against Preston and now sit three points behind the Blades in the Championship table.

Next up, the Whites take on Oxford United at Elland Road. Promoted from League One last season, the U’s have recently sacked Des Buckingham and currently find themselves managerless ahead of their trip to Leeds this weekend.

But Oxford United are in talks with Gary Rowett and he could even be in the dugout for the game in Yorkshire on Saturday.

Daniel Farke could become first Leeds manager since Howard Wilkinson to do one thing

Leeds United don’t have much of a recent history against Oxford United, although the teams have barely played each other since the turn of the Century.

In fact, Leeds have only played Oxford United in friendly matches and in the League Cup since 2000, beating them in the cup and in one friendly, although the U’s won the last meeting between the two (4-3 in a friendly match at Oxford in 2018).

The last time Leeds United beat Oxford United in a league match, at home, was way back in 1989: 35 years ago when Howard Wilkinson was in charge, meaning that Farke could end a staggering 35-year wait for a Leeds league win at home to Oxford this weekend.

What happened in Leeds’ 1989/90 season could bode well for Daniel Farke

Leeds did the double over Oxford United the last time they were both in the same league, which was the 1989/90 Division 2 season.

The Whites won 2-1 at Elland Road and 4-2 at Oxford. Coincidentally, Leeds went on to win the Division 2 title that season, with Gordon Strachan their top scorer that season with 18 goals.

Farke then could repeat history this season by beating Oxford United at home, potentially doing the double over the League One play-off winners, and then going on to win the title, or at least promotion.
