The criticism aimed at Brenden Aaronson has not stopped all season from sections of the Leeds United fanbase, with the United States ace becoming a bit of a Marmite character.
Some love what Aaronson is doing and has done this season. His incessant pressing, non-stop work rate in a Leeds shirt and a reminder that Aaronson is actually Leeds’ second-highest goalscorer with five so far.
But doubts have arisen surrounding Aaronson’s end product and his lack of physicality. Aaronson missed a glorious chance to equalise against Preston on Saturday, blazing an effort high and wide when through.
He has six goals and assists this season but as we approach the halfway stage of the campaign, Aaronson is far below his aim of 15 goals and 15 assists. Graham Smyth expects Leeds to try and sign a new no.10.
Tony Dorigo says Leeds already have a replacement for Aaronson
Despite his inconsistency, Aaronson continues to start week in, week out for Leeds. Daniel Farke has made it clear that the £25m star is the club’s only natural no.10 and there have been flashes of genius this term.
Alongside his work rate and the odd goal, Aaronson’s ability in transition is incredible and it saw Preston captain Ben Whiteman booked on 32 minutes. Tony Dorigo feels Leeds do have another no.10 option.
Speaking to The Square Ball, Aaronson said Wilfried Gnonto can play there: “I think we’ve seen it [vision] in flashes. The Blackburn game, I thought a change might happen. The Boro game, he played really well.
“Those turns, making things happen; that’s what we’re after, need that all the time. Gnonto could come in as a 10. There are solutions. He works his socks off, great attitude. For that I give him a lot of credit.”
The attacking players Leeds are being linked with in January…
James McAtee was a target for Leeds in the summer, and interest from Elland Road in McAtee remains ahead of January. But the chances are, the Man City star will be off to a Premier League club next month.
Aston Villa’s Louie Barry is a Leeds target, but he is more of a striker. MLS’ Young Player of the Season Diego Luna has also been linked with Leeds after a fabulous season with American outfit Real Salt Lake.
Burnley’s Josh Brownhill has been linked with Leeds time after time, with his contract expiring at Turf Moor next season. A mid-season move is unlikely but Leeds have compiled a list of no.10 options.
