‘Could still be done’… Leeds United can do a deal for 26-year-old man despite issues off the pitch

Ben Godfrey has emerged as a new transfer target for Leeds United in the January window with the Everton defender struggling for game time – and a deal can still be done despite issues off the pitch.

Godfrey, 26, has only been afforded three appearances this season – warming the bench under Everton manager Sean Dyche. It comes after losing his place to James Tarkowski, and talent Jarrad Branthwaite.

A two-time England international, Godfrey needs game time. Leeds are keen on a move for the former Norwich man, a defender that Daniel Farke has described as “outstanding” but can easily see red mist.

Of course, there issues off the pitch. Everton have been deducted 10 points and Leeds are one of three clubs, along with Leicester and Burnley, that are planning to sue the Toffees. A meeting has been held.

But Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth does not believe that the off-field rumblings would stop Leeds from doing a deal for Godfrey this month. Graeme Bailey told us there is a genuine interest.

“I think business could still be done with a club like Everton, even if there have been some difficulties shall we say, of an off-field nature,” Smyth said, on the Inside Elland Road podcast – televised on Shots.

“The big problem is actually convincing Ben Godfrey he’s going to play if he comes here. Does he get in ahead of Rodon? Seems very, very unlikely. Is Farke going to suddenly go off the idea of Archie Gray?”

Leeds’ move to sue Everton may gain even more strength if the Toffees are deducted more points after being found guilty of breaching Profit & Sustainability rules for 22-23. But that is behind the scenes.

Appeals need to be sorted out and it will be a while before a decision is made, you would expect. In terms of transfers between the two – Leeds loaned Jack Harrison to Everton. Willy Gnonto was targeted.

So, in terms of transfers, both clubs are still likely to do business as long as price tags are met. Everton are in no position to turn down cash because of a club rivalry, on or off the field, at this moment in time.
