Chris Wilder makes ‘narrative’ claim as Sheffield United go ahead of Leeds United in the Championship

Sheffield United have taken the ascendancy in the Championship title race and Chris Wilder has offered his thoughts on the ‘narrative’.

Sheffield United have now claimed top spot in the Championship table after defeating Coventry City 3-1 on Friday night, thanks to goals from Leeds-linked Gustavo Hamer, Tyrese Campbell and Rhian Brewster.

That has piled pressure on Leeds United for their return to action against Swansea City at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon. They know anything less than a win will give the Blades the advantage.

Daniel Farke’s team had a healthy lead last month after defeating Sunderland and Sheffield United in back-to-back games but just one win in four afterwards has seen them lose their breathing space.

The stakes couldn’t be higher but Chris Wilder isn’t buying into the ‘narrative’ of the title race and has made a prediction about Leeds in their fixture.

Speaking after the game, Wilder said he expects both Leeds and Burnley to be extremely motivated to pick up wins this weekend.

The Blades boss replied when asked about the title race: “I’m not cranking any pressure up.

“It’s just a narrative everyone wants to get involved with. The points are important at the start of the season and the end.

“To get out of a division, you’ve got to show an incredible amount of qualities. Whether we play first or second, it will all even itself out.

“No doubt the other two teams will have the bit between their teeth in the next game or two.”

The stress of wilting under the strain once again is palpable for Leeds, as falling back into the play-offs like last year would be a serious psychological blow.

Thankfully, the Whites do have a massive advantage as their promotion rivals still have to play one another

The game isn’t for a few weeks yet – Monday, April 21 – so there is always the threat of things getting worse before then.

But Leeds have a favourable set of fixtures and know that as long as they win them all, at least one of their rivals will drop points.

Burnley being the home side is also a massive boost, as it would be very helpful if they prevented the Blades from winning.
