Chris Wilder has reminder for Daniel Farke in promotion race as Leeds United go ahead of Sheffield United

Sheffield United fans would have been strangely afflicted on Sunday as Leeds United beat Sheffield Wednesday to go top of the Championship table.

Chris Wilder’s side secured a 2-0 win themselves on Saturday afternoon as they beat Daniel Farke’s old side Norwich City at Bramall Lane, with Leeds now facing Norwich on Wednesday night at Elland Road.

Having gone top before Leeds took on Sheffield Wednesday, Blades fans will have been hoping Leeds would have dropped points but in doing so, it will have meant their rivals Wednesday would get a result.

In the end, Leeds cruised to a 3-0 win even if there were a few moments on Sunday in which Leeds fans held their breath. With 19 league games left to play, Leeds sit top and are a point ahead of Wilder’s men.

Chris Wilder comments on race for automatic promotion

Ask Leeds and Sheffield United fans, and both sets of supporters would probably take where they are in the league at the moment. Avoiding the play-offs is so much more important than the fight for first place.

For the majority of the season, it has looked like a battle between Leeds, Sheffield United, Burnley and Sunderland for the top two and that remains. Wilder though, had a reminder for Leeds as per Leeds Live.

“I’ve managed over a thousand games. Nothing’s won in January, but it was a big three points on offer and to take four points off Norwich, who are well coached with a lot of good players, is a good effort.”

How do Leeds compare this season, to last term after 27 games?

Speaking after the win over Wednesday, Chris Waddle backed Leeds to finish in the top two. But Burnley and Sunderland are by no means out of it, with Sunderland’s Leo Hjelde confident his side can go up.

Hjelde of course, joined Sunderland from Leeds a year ago. Leeds have an impressive 56 points from 27 games and by far the best goal difference, and certainly it is an improvement on the 2023-24 campaign.

Leeds will be looking to reaffirm their position at the top of the table with Norwich next on Wednesday. Then, a huge clash against Burnley in a week’s time, the only side to beat Leeds at Elland Road this term.
