Former Premier League referee Chris Foy says the decision to rule out Crysencio Summerville’s goal in Leeds United’s win over Plymouth Argyle was correct.
Summerville had the ball in the back of the net on 27 minutes after Sam Byram’s deflected through ball, but speaking to Sky Sports, Foy has confirmed it was the right call.
Leeds were 1-0 ahead at the time after Dan James‘ superb strike from the edge of the area broke the deadlock in an extremely dominant first half performance.
Daniel Farke’s side were pressing on to find a quickfire second goal and thought they had it as Summerville finished off from close-range, before he was denied a seventh goal of the season by the linesman’s flag.
Thankfully for Leeds that did not matter too much in the end as just a couple of minutes later Joel Piroe doubled the lead, latching onto an assist from Summerville himself.
Leeds can’t complain about Saturday’s refereeing decisions
While Byram’s through ball did deflect off Plymouth defender Julio Pleguezuelo, Hoy says it was the right decision as Summerville was in an offside possession, and the touch was an ‘uncontrolled action’.
He said: “There are a couple of factors at play here but the assistant referee and referee correctly rule the goal out for offside. When Leeds United’s Sam Byram (#25) plays the initial ball through it is clear that Crysencio Summerville (#10) has just strayed beyond Plymouth’s second last defender (#6), and is in an offside position.
“Although Plymouth’s Argyle’s Julio Pleguezuelo (#5) gets a touch as he attempts to intercept the ball, this is an uncontrolled action, therefore Summerville has clearly gained an advantage from being in an offside position when the initial pass was made, and the goal is correctly disallowed.”
There were definitely some 50/50 calls that could’ve gone either way in Saturday’s match but in truth, neither side have much to complain about.
Georginio Rutter could’ve easily had a penalty early on after being shoved to the ground from behind, while Plymouth also had a shout following a challenge from Ethan Ampadu.
You could argue that each of the decisions have evened themselves out over the course of the 90 minutes, and Leeds were deserved winners.
