Carlton Palmer says Sam Greenwood can still return to Leeds United from Middlesbrough next term despite a bargain permanent £1.5m clause being included in his loan deal – with Greenwood shining.
Greenwood, 21, has been on fire. Going into last weekend, he scored three goals in five games for Boro – but his best moment came on Saturday. Against Leeds’ promotion rivals Leicester, the score read 0-0.
Leeds had beaten Leicester in the game prior. Inside the last 10 minutes, Greenwood had the chance to curl a free-kick into the top corner and secure a 1-0 win for Boro – and he did just that, from 25 yards.
A stunning free-kick. Phil Hay reports on The Athletic’s site that Boro have a £1.5m permanent option in Greenwood’s loan. That fee is beginning to be seen as a bit of a bargain, Leeds have made a mistake.
Given his form for Carrick’s side, you would expect that Boro would activate the permanent clause. But Palmer told FLW that Greenwood can still return – if, Leeds gain promotion at the end of the season.
“Some believe that Leeds are looking foolish over Sam Greenwood. The fact he’s doing well is exactly what Leeds United would have hoped for. This does not mean the player will sign for Middlesbrough.
“He could end up going back to Leeds where he’s contracted until 2026. If the manager of Leeds gives him reasons to believe he will get game time and they’re back in the Premier League, he could go back.”

Given Leeds tried to sign a no.10 in the summer – in the form of Matt O’Riley, Nadiem Amiri and Kenny McLean – one might have expected Greenwood to be given more of a chance. But, Leeds let him go.
Maybe he needed it, clearly he is starring for Boro at this level. All, from the left flank. He is showing quality, turning potential into proven quality, and versatility. If Leeds can keep Greenwood, we should.
