Reports emerged on Monday that Sam Greenwood has a £1.5m permanent clause in his Middlesbrough loan deal – but losing him for such a tiny fee would be a massive mistake from those at Leeds United.
Greenwood, 21, scored the first goal of his Middlesbrough loan spell on Saturday in what was only his second start. He had struggled to get in under Michael Carrick initially, but is growing in importance.
Against his boyhood side of Sunderland, Greenwood netted in a 4-0 win for Boro – with the Black Cats struggling after a red card. On Monday, Phil Hay reported on The Athletic that he has a £1.5m clause.
The fee Leeds paid for him, from Arsenal in 2020. Greenwood starred for our 21’s, and has been in and around the senior side for some time – playing 35 times for us, 25 of which came in the Premier League.
Indeed, Greenwood produced five goal involvements in that time – often playing deep in midfield. His only goal for us came in that 4-3 win over Bournemouth – while his creativity has seen him create four.
£1.5m Greenwood clause would be a massive mistake at Leeds
Greenwood is versatile, he is young and he can both score and create goals – in the top tier, and in the Championship. He has a very bright future – so, to sell him for just £1.5m would be a massive mistake.
He is a player that just needs a run of games and the trust of a manager that knows how to get the best out of him. Farke might have been that man but it seems he and Greenwood chose to go separate ways.
It is within Greenwood to easily go and shine in the Premier League and end up being worth a whole lot more than £1.5m. Leeds could be about to let him go for a fee far below what he should be valued at.
