The Athletic claim Leeds United star Sam Greenwood has a £1.5m clause included in his loan deal at Middlesbrough – after the versatile ace scored for Michael Carrick’s side on Saturday, at Sunderland.
Greenwood, 21, was a late loan exit from Leeds in the summer. Numerous midfield signings and the breakthrough of Archie Gray seemingly convinced Greenwood to find a new home. He joined Boro.
After a few sub appearances, Greenwood came into the starting line-up last week and his start at Sunderland – his former side, of course – was only his second start since his arrival at the Riverside.
Playing from the left, the ex-Arsenal academy product opened his account for Boro in a 4-0 away win, which surprised many – but was largely helped by Sunderland going down to 10 men. A massive win.

Now, The Athletic have detailed an update regarding Greenwood’s future. It had been believed that it was just a dry loan to take Greenwood to the North East, but it is now claimed there is a £1.5m option.
Leeds star Greenwood has a £1.5m clause in Middlesbrough loan
It was a surprise that Leeds allowed Greenwood to go in the first place. Especially, having tried to sign a no.10 – in Nadiem Amiri and Matt O’Riley – but failing to do so. Greenwood could have been that man.
He had shown glimpses in the Premier League of a top player, and played in numerous positions. So, to let him go on loan – and then, include a permanent clause – seems like a mistake from us. Time will tell.
