Brenden Aaronson tells US media what his relationship is like with Leeds United fans after Elland Road return

The redemption arch has been plentiful for Brenden Aaronson at this early stage in the season, with the American netting four times since returning to Leeds United and winning fans back over.

The 24-year-old was not in the good books among Leeds supporters when it was announced that the former Salzburg star would be returning to Daniel Farke’s squad for the 2024-25 Championship season.

One of eight players that used Victor Orta’s relegation escape clause after the club had failed to survive the drop in 2022-23. Aaronson jumped ship on loan, joining German Bundesliga side Union Berlin.

But after a poor season at Leeds, he struggled at Union. Aaronson even admitted his struggles back in October last year, but he is slowly regaining that confidence back at Elland Road, in the Championship.

Farke could not stop Aaronson going on loan last summer but this time around, he had a choice. Did he sell Aaronson, or look to bring him back into the fold and make him a key man in Leeds’ promotion push.

He did the latter, with Farke holding a conversation with Aaronson to convince him over a return. He has done that and since proven a key member of the side, scoring four and winning Leeds fans back over.

“It was tough at first. I understood the feelings that they had for me coming back,” Aaronson told CBS Sports after the win over Plymouth. “It was tough and things happen, that’s football at the end of the day.

“But they’ve gotten on my shoulders and been pushing me. I can’t thank them enough for that because it’s been really good after me coming back. I’ve been pushing, putting in a lot of work,” Aaronson said.

Aaronson’s numbers already better than two previous seasons

Stuart Dallas was full of praise for Aaronson on the weekend, suggesting there aren’t many better players in the Leeds squad at receiving the ball on the half-turn. He said this, prior to Aaronson scoring again.

But interestingly, Aaronson has already clocked up more goals and assists this season in November, than he has done in his previous two seasons – firstly with Leeds in the Premier League, then with Union Berlin.

Given he has four goals already, his trajectory is well above double figures come the end of the season and that is something Leeds lacked last season – a no.10 able to go and score goals on a regular basis.
