Ben White embarrassed by £3.5m player Leeds United tried to sign last summer – he looks a real gem

Daniel Farke’s work in the transfer window is somewhat underrated at Leeds United. The German gaffer has pulled off some sensational signings and come close to a few others, too.

Nadiem Amiri for example, is on the verge of a recall to the Germany National Team after starring and even captaining Mainz. Amiri came within a whisker of signing for Leeds after a £5m deal was agreed.

Under Farke, Leeds have signed the likes of Ao Tanaka, Joe Rodon, Ethan Ampadu, Jayden Bogle and Joel Piroe during his tenure. Even their sales have been decent, selling players for enormous profit.

That of course is not all Farke, but the German gaffer has had a big say in who Leeds sign. He tried to sign Tanaka 12 months earlier, but another player he wanted to sign last summer was Couhaib Driouech.

Couhaib Driouech embarrassed Ben White on Wednesday night

On Wednesday night, Arsenal took on PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League. The Gunners won the first leg 7-1, allowing Mikel Arteta to make a few changes and the second leg resulted in a 2-2 draw.

PSV were improved and Driouech netted only his third goal of the season for PSV after what has been a bit a frustrating season for him, since Driouech snubbed a move to Leeds and joined PSV for £3.5m.

Driouech sped past Ben White as if he was not there on Wednesday night, latching on to a through ball before chipping David Raya to score PSV’s second. A goal worthy of the stage it was scored on.

How close did Leeds come to signing PSV winger Driouech?

There was genuine interest in Driouech from Leeds according to reports and The Whites were close to making a move for the winger, having a hand in 32 goals after 101 games for Dutch side Excelsior.

Leeds instead, brought in Largie Ramazani and Manor Solomon and the duo have taken well to life at Elland Road – so, there’s no regrets at not landing the Dutchman. But, he showed his quality last night.

Driouech could be available again in the summer given his lack of game time for PSV, but Leeds will likely have a bigger pool of players to search in if promoted to the Premier League at the end of the season.
