Phil Hay has reported on The Athletic’s live transfer blog that Bayer Leverkusen star Nadiem Amiri was in Leeds over the bank holiday weekend – but has returned to Germany, without undergoing a medical.
The saga surrounding 26-year-old Amiri has been incredibly tumultuous. If reports are to be believed, it is claimed that Amiri has performed a number of u-turns, rejecting then accepting offers from Leeds.
So much so, the Germany star travelled to Yorkshire after remaining an unused sub in Leverkusen’s 3-0 away win over Max Wober’s Gladbach on Saturday evening. However, a transfer is now off the cards.
Hay has delivered some clarity on the situation. The Athletic reporter confirms that Amiri is now back in Germany. He did not undergo a medical while in Leeds – or, did he give any indication he would accept.
Hay states that Leeds had agreed a £5m fee with Leverkusen last week – but that a move was always going to be dependant on whether Amiri wanted to join. Whether a move could still happen, is unclear.

Amiri would be a real coup. A player with Germany caps, coming in as a no.10. A serious player, far too good for Championship football. He is still an important part of Leverkusen’s side, under Xabi Alonso.
That says it all. Amiri is also in the final 12 months of his contract. But, Amiri is unwilling to move to a Championship club – it seems. He will want a top-tier side to show his best form ahead of Euro 2024.
Leeds have until Friday to make some more signings. In midfield, Ao Tanaka and Glen Kamara look as though they are coming in. There is also interest in Luke Thomas and Djed Spence, enquiries made.
