Patrick Bamford shares hilarious story of how he once embarrassed himself inside Leeds dressing room

Patrick Bamford has been one of the leading figures inside Leeds United’s dressing room for some time now, but perhaps even more so this season.

Leeds had a leadership group consisting of Bamford, Liam Cooper, Luke Ayling, Stuart Dallas, Rodrigo and Robin Koch last season but half of those are no longer at the club.

Cooper and Dallas are also expected to depart at the end of their deals in the summer, leaving only Bamford from that group. Younger players such as Ethan Ampadu and Pascal Struijk have been tasked with stepping up this season.

However, speaking on the latest episode of the ‘My Mate’s a Footballer Podcast‘, Bamford has shared a hilarious dressing room story from before a match last season in which he captained the side.

Bamford was handed the armband four times during Jesse Marsch’s time at the club and was asked to deliver a speech shortly before the team headed out onto the pitch, in which he turned into a laughing stock.

He said: “I was the captain for the day so before the game Jesse has gone, ‘right Patrick, your turn to speak’. As I’m doing the speech, I’ve got through it and I think it’s generally what I am saying is good.

“And then the last bit before we go out, it’s like my balls have dropped and my voice for one note has just gone, I’m like talking, and then for one word it’s gone. As we’re going out I can see all the physios p—– themselves and I’m like, ‘oh no, this ain’t good.’

“We’ve played the game and I thought, ‘well no one has said anything’. So, maybe it was just me hearing it, but as we’ve got back in after the game, the only thing anyone spoke about wasn’t the game, it was my speech before the game and how I’ve hit that high note.”

Bamford has not had it easy at Leeds over the last two-and-a-half-years but he still remains a figure in the dressing room players consistently look up to, particularly the younger ones.

The 30-year-old has shared stories of how Joe Gelhardt is always coming up to him for advice, while Georginio Rutter says he is also a big help to him both on and off the pitch.

With that in mind, it is nice to see him doing so well at the moment after so many difficult months. His teammates will also be delighted to see it, too.
