Archie Gray has shared what great uncle Eddie told him after he scored his first Leeds United goal on Friday.

The 17-year-old netted a dramatic, late deflected winner in Leeds’ 3-1 victory over Leicester City at Elland Road in what was an incredible moment both for him and the club.

In what has been a breakthrough season for Gray, he is the fourth member of his family to play and now score for Leeds, following in the footsteps of grandad Frank, father Andy and, of course, Eddie. Brother Harry may not be too far behind, either.

Eddie is actually a one club man and one of Leeds’ best ever players and so watching his great nephew now follow in his footsteps will give him a great sense of pride.

In an interview with ITV, though, Archie joked that Eddie was ‘annoyed’ he scored as it meant he broke his record of how young he was when he got his first Leeds goal, before then sharing how much of a big moment it was for everyone.

Archie shares great uncle Eddie’s reaction

He said: “I think he was more annoyed he is happy because I beat his record by two days of how young he was to score a goal [for Leeds]. But yeah he was really happy and I spoke to him after the game and he was really happy for me. It’s just a proud moment for everyone in the family.”

Gray’s first Leeds goal but was always going to be a special moment for everyone at the club but doing it in a game of that magnitude, in those circumstances, made it even better.

There had been talk that it had gone down as an own goal but for now it does look like Gray has been credited with it, which is the fair thing to do considering it was on target.

Manager Daniel Farke is said to have joked with Gray that his first goal was always going to be via a deflection, but he won’t care one bit.

Hopefully Archie can follow in the footsteps of Eddie and make that goal his first of many in a Leeds shirt, as he continues to build the family legacy at the club.
