Archie Gray shared his reaction to finding out that he had not been awarded the goal which put Leeds United in front against Leicester City on Friday night.

For around 10 minutes, it appeared that Archie Gray may be the match-winner in the stunning game against the Foxes at Elland Road. Just two minutes after Connor Roberts had equalised for Leeds, Gray’s strike found its way into the back of the net via a big deflection.

Understandably, the goal sent the ground into a frenzy. Gray has been absolutely outstanding throughout the season. And while he found the going much tougher on Friday, there was no question how delighted the fans were to see the 17-year-old make the decisive impact.

Unfortunately for Gray however, it turns out that the initial deflection took the ball in the direction of Wout Faes. And it was the centre-back’s touch which sent the ball into the back of the net.

And it was while speaking to Sky Sports (broadcast on 23/2; 22:05) that Gray learned that he was not being awarded the first goal of his professional career.

“I’m not bothered. Hopefully I’ll have loads of chances to score goals for this amazing club. Like I said, I can hardly hear myself speak. It’s amazing,” he said.

Teenager’s time to find the back of the net will come

It is hardly surprising that Gray took the news so well. It would have understandable had he been disappointed given what a moment it was.

However, Gray has played with such maturity this season. And his attitude has been spot on. A lot has been asked of him this term, particularly playing at right-back. But he has given absolutely everything.

It would be interesting to know if Gray’s strike was going in before the first deflection that took it towards Faes. But as he said, it means little who exactly got the goal.

All that matters is Leeds have secured a massive three points.
