After three games, Leeds United rank as one of the Premier League’s worst teams for one key thing

Leeds United have started the Premier League season in a steady fashion, sitting in 12th place of the table for this month’s international break.

Leeds United have more than held their own in the Premier League so far. On the opening day, Leeds United beat Everton 1-0, but followed that up with an embarrassing 5-0 defeat against Arsenal before a goalless draw against Newcastle United last time out.

For Daniel Farke, it’s been perhaps a better start to the season than expected. Having come up from the Championship and having failed to really sign a standout attacker in the summer, many will back Leeds to struggle this season.

But so far, so good for the Whites. Though where the goals will eventually come from this season remains unclear, after Leeds United’s deadline day fiasco, there are certainly fears over who is going to score the goals to keep the team in the Premier League.

Leeds United’s xG so far this season is shocking

A good indicator of how threatening a team is in front of goal if their expected goals (xG). But Leeds United’s poor xG in the Premier League so far this season is a good indicator of their current squad struggles, and the struggles they might face in the run up to the January transfer window.

So far this season, the Whites have scored just one goal in three league games, and that goal was a penalty. Leeds currently boast an xG of just 2.9, which is an xG for the whole season so far, not per game, and is the joint third-lowest in the entire division.

Perhaps more worrying is Leeds’ xG from non-penalty goals, which is just 2.2 and the second-lowest in the Premier League.

Leeds United’s plan for Dominic Calvert-Lewin this season

For Farke and Leeds United, a lot of hopes this season ride on summer signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Leeds United signed Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer earlier in the summer, and after Farke’s failed deadline day pursuits of different players, Calvert-Lewin is now the man with all the pressure at Leeds United.

But the former Everton man’s patchy injury record and patchy recent form in front of goal doesn’t bode well for the Whites, though Leeds United have a plan to get Calvert-Lewin firing in the Premier League this season.

The club have invested quarter of a million pounds in new facilities at the club, including a muscle recovery wet room and sauna, with two new gyms and a revamped medical area. On top of that, Leeds United are hoping that the club’s existing medical staff can work their magic to keep Calvert-Lewin fit throughout the season, according to reports.

But even if Calvert-Lewin stays fit, whether or not he can score the goals to keep Leeds United in the Premier League this season remains to be seen, if not unlikely. It’s a lot to ask of a player who’s not enjoyed the best form over the last few seasons, but if there’s one thing Farke can take from his disappointing stats in front of goal, it’s his side’s good defensive record so far.

Leeds have kept two clean sheets in their opening three Premier League games, and whilst the club aren’t scoring many goals, not conceding many either, as they’re currently in a cup or mid-table position.
