The 49ers could make the surprise move to hire Steven Gerrard as Leeds United’s next manager if they complete a takeover of the Yorkshire club this summer – and reports in February said that Gerrard was open to taking the role.

Indeed, Gerrard was also linked with the Leeds dugout following the sacking of Jesse Marsch. Loosely linked almost immediately after the sacking of Marsch, Gerrard was linked again with us, as we struggled to find a replacement.

Gerrard, 43, is out of work since being sacked by Aston Villa at the beginning of the 2022-23 season. He left Villa in a poor state, and his reputation has worsened given the excellent form of the same side since Unai Emery took over.

But now Leeds have been relegated, the club are looking for a new manager and could look to start a new approach – after going through four managers in one season. The club need a long-term manager, giving him time and faith.

Reports in February said that Gerrard was open to taking Leeds role

The Sun say the 49ers want Gerrard if they complete a takeover. It is unclear what is going to happen upstairs at Leeds – following Andrea Radrizzani’s statement. But Gerrard’s stance on a move to Leeds is currently unknown.

However, The Mirror said that following links to Leeds, Gerrard was keen on a third role in senior management with Leeds – Gary McAllister return as his assistant. Whether that is still the case in the Championship, who knows.

Leeds cannot be picky. While a new manager is likely to come after clarification is made at board level, the likes of Graham Potter and Brendan Rodgers seem unlikely. Keeping Sam Allardyce cannot be an option. Gerrard could be.
