Junior Firpo has confirmed he is closing in on a return from injury for Leeds United.

Firpo has been out of action for the entirety of Daniel Farke’s reign at Elland Road with the German having been appointed all the way back in July.

The 27-year-old has been struggling with a knee injury for over two months now but the other side of the international break could see his return to the side.

Leeds did not sign an out-and-out left-back in the summer and so once again, Firpo has another shot at trying to nail down that position.

Firpo has struggled for form and fitness at Leeds since his move from Barcelona in 2021, but once he eventually returns, he will have his final shot at redemption.

As per Fabrizio Romano, Firpo had been expected to leave Leeds in the summer but a combination of his injury and lack of interest, has seen him stay.

In fairness to him, he is one of a handful of last season’s first team squad who hasn’t turned his back on the club, and for that he should be respected.

However, that will only get him so far and it is now time for Firpo to put in some consistent performances on the pitch and show why Leeds spent £12 million to sign him from Barcelona.

On paper, Firpo should be too good for the Championship but his performances at Leeds have shown little evidence to suggest that will be the case.

Firpo will not have as much work defensively to do in the second tier and given his strengths lay in going forward, that should benefit him.

There is no doubt that this is now Firpo’s last chance to show what he is made of at Leeds and if by January he hasn’t done so, it will be time to replace him.
