Back in the summer, Leeds United were targeting a number of new signings in different positions. A new goalkeeper, right-back, centre-back, midfielders, a winger and a striker were brought in, in the summer.
But two positions were in need of strengthening, and did not get it – and not for want of trying. Leeds wanted a new left-back, and a new no.10. The latter, moves made for Nadiem Amiri and Matt O’Riley.
At left-back, Leeds signed Sam Byram – but he is right-footed. He has performed well but of course, remains injury prone. Junior Firpo is still sidelined and more than likely to leave if given the opportunity.
Stuart Dallas is a long-term absentee. So, Leeds are relying on Byram – and needed a left-back. There was interest in new Sheffield United man Luke Thomas, and a Leeds return for Burnley’s Charlie Taylor.
Neither materialised. The need for a left-back remains. Kai Wagner is now available on a free with The Athletic reporting that Leeds are interested – and talks of a new deal at Philadelphia Union have ended.
Wagner on a free would be perfect January signing for Leeds
Angus Kinnear recently said that there will be funds if injuries occur, for the January window. But, that the loan market will be utilised. Well, if there aren’t any injuries – a free transfer still saves Leeds cash.
Surely then, a move for assist machine Wagner – who is clearly well-liked at Leeds – would be the perfect January signing to solve the left-back issue? A player who has had a hand in 13 goals, in 2023.
Leeds would be getting a serious player on the left, Wagner would be joining a big club with Premier League aspirations – and Kinnear’s tight stronghold on finances is unaffected. An absolute no-brainer.
