Leeds United were ambitious in the players they targeted during the summer transfer window.

As such, Leeds unfortunately tried and failed to sign a number of targets from across some of Europe’s top-flight leagues, despite big money offers.

San Francisco 49ers Enterprises were willing to splash a combined £16 million to sign Nadiem Amiri from Bayer Leverkusen, and Joseph Paintsil from Genk, but unfortunately to no avail.

As per Sky Sports, Leeds also submitted a £10 million offer for Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley, who has been one of Scotland’s outstanding players in recent years.

Despite the big money bid, Celtic held firm in their stance O’Riley was not for sale, and of the group of players Leeds failed to sign, he could be the one they regret the most.

It is through no fault of Leeds’ that O’Riley did not make the move, as splashing £10 million on a single player for a Championship club is ambituous.

However, he really would’ve been another player to add to the squad who possesses ability already beyond that of the Championship.

O’Riley has been on fire so far this season in a Celtic shirt, netting five goals and providing two assists in just eight Scottish Premiership matches from midfield this season.

That sort of goal threat is something Leeds currently lack in their midfield, though the players who have been brought into strengthen that area certainly cannot be grumbled at.

With O’Riley having now signed a new contract at Celtic, it feels as though Leeds will have to get promoted if they want to bring him to Elland Road.
