If Leeds United were thinking of trying to sign Matt O’Riley from Celtic in the January transfer window, then they should forget it.

Leeds United reportedly wanted to sign Matt O’Riley from Celtic in the summer transfer window.

Sky Sports reported on August 31 that Leeds offered Celtic £10 million in transfer fees for O’Riley.

Defending Scottish Premiership champions Celtic reportedly rejected the bid and “reiterated to Leeds that they consider the midfielder not for sale”.

Celtic are aiming to win the Scottish Premiership title yet again this season and are also playing in the UEFA Champions League.

And, the Hoops have now decided to hand O’Riley a new contract.

Any chances of Leeds signing the 22-year-old midfielder in the January transfer window are now surely over.

Matt O’Riley signs new Celtic contract

The Hoops have announced on their official website that O’Riley has “signed a new four-year deal which will see him remain at Celtic until 2027”.

The midfielder is delighted to have put pen to paper on a deal and said: “It’s probably hard to put it into a short sentence but I think everybody knows how much I enjoy playing here, especially at Celtic Park because I don’t think you get that anywhere else”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers said: “Matt has so much to his game but always wants to learn, develop and grow further and from that perspective, together with the inherent talent he has, he really is a joy to coach and work with.”

O’Riley celebrated his new contract with a goal for Celtic against Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday.

The Hoops beat Motherwell 2-1 away from home.

The Denmark Under-21 international scored the winner in the seventh minute of injury time.

O’Riley has scored five goals and given two assists in seven Scottish Premiership matches so far this season.

The midfielder scored three goals and gave 12 assists in 32 league starts for the Hoops last season.
