Leeds United’s failure to sign a natural left-back in the summer has not caused any issues thanks to the signing of Sam Byram.
Byram re-signed for the Whites on a free transfer on the eve of Leeds’ Championship opener with Cardiff City, and since breaking into the starting XI, he has been brilliant.
Upon his arrival back at Elland Road, Byram’s signing was met with some scepticism by supporters due to his injury record over the last few seasons.
Thankfully so far, Byram has only missed one game through injury, though Leeds did continue to assess the market for potential left-back signings in the final week of the window.
One player who they held a serious interest in was Leicester City’s Luke Thomas, with Phil Hay reporting Leeds had launched an official enquiry over taking him on a season-long-loan.
Thomas has lost every game since snubbing Leeds
Despite Leeds’ interest, Thomas instead ended up making the move to Yorkshire neighbours Sheffield United, as the prospect of playing Premier League football was too good to turn down.
Thomas made over 50 appearances in England’s top-flight for Leicester until their relegation alongside Leeds last season, though he was not seen as part of new manager Enzo Maresca’s plans.
Despite a difficult year at the Foxes, Thomas was able to secure a move back up English football’s pyramid, but it really has not gone to plan so far.
Thomas has started six matches for Sheffield United since his move to Bramall Lane, losing every single one of them, including a crushing 8-0 defeat at home to Newcastle in September.
The Blades have picked up just one point in 10 matches so far and this is just yet more evidence that a move to a Premier League club may not always be the most beneficial for a player’s career.
