Leeds United’s U21s may not receive the same hype as a couple of years ago but there are still plenty of players pushing to progress into the first team.

During their time in the Premier League, Leeds spent a lot of money on signing some of the top young talents from across the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe.

Two or three seasons ago, Leeds had the likes of Crysencio Summerville, Joe Gelhardt, Charlie Cresswell, Lewis Bate and plenty more all in the same U21s side.

Unfortunately, it was only really Summerville from that team able to establish himself in the senior side, but the fact he was sold for £25 million + add-ons means it was a strategy that worked.

Leeds’ U21s have not received that same sort of investment in the last couple of years, but that should not take away from some of the talent in that current team.

Luca Thomas continues fine start to season for Leeds U21s

After a two-week international break, Leeds’ U21s were back in action away at Charlton Athletic on Friday night.

In their first three matches of the season, the young Whites drew all three of their matches in Premier League 2 against Stoke City, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace 1-1.

However, it was Premier League Cup action for the U21s last night, and for the fourth time in a row, they were again held to a draw by the same scoreline.

It is the form of Luca Thomas which is really standing out for the youngsters this season, though, as he netted his third goal of the season.

Thomas was named Leeds U21s’ player of the month for August and continued that momentum into their return to action by opening the scoreline in the fourth minute.

The 19-year-old linked up nicely with Rhys Chadwick before arrowing a powerful left-footed strike into the far corner.

Daniel Farke has already noticed Leeds youngster Thomas

Given his age, and the fact he only signed a one-year-deal in the summer, this is somewhat of a make or break season for Thomas.

He has certainly made a brilliant start towards ensuring his long-term future could be at Leeds, and he has already caught the eye of Daniel Farke.

Thomas was one of six youngsters named to be apart of Leeds‘ pre-season tour of Germany in the summer.

He will now be hoping he continues this form for the U21s with the potential of getting a senior debut at some stage this season.
