Focus has swung away from the Leeds United first team for a week or two with the first international break of the season underway, and it may hand a few youngsters the chance to shine in training.

Many senior Leeds players have jetted off this week to link up with their National Teams. Just at Wales, Leeds have four players in the form of Karl Darlow, Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rodon and teenager Charlie Crew.

Mateo Joseph has also linked up with Spain’s U21 side and that may hand Luca Thomas a chance to be called-up to senior training. Thomas, 19, was one of six Leeds youngsters called up to travel to Germany.

The youngster clearly caught the eye of Daniel Farke in order to get picked to go to Germany, alongside the likes of Harry Gray, Sam Chambers and James Debayo, training alongside the Leeds senior side.

Returning to Leeds this summer, Thomas is now the first-choice striker in the U21 side and made a super start with two goals in two games this season at U21 Premier League level for Scott Gardner’s side.

The second-string have drawn all three league games 1-1 so far, with Thomas scoring in draws against Stoke City and Aston Villa. Last time out against Palace, Thomas was not part of Gardner’s U21 squad.

It might have been that he was part of the senior squad that faced Hull on Saturday a day after the 21’s drew with Palace. Despite his absence, Thomas has been voted the U21’s Player of the Month at Leeds.

Make or break time for Thomas this season after new Leeds deal

The striker signed a new one-year contract in the summer, meaning he has the 2024-25 campaign to either make a breakthrough into the senior Leeds side of face leaving Elland Road come next summer.

Signed from Manchester City in 2021, there is no doubt that Thomas has impressed. Playing 59 times in total across the U21 and U18 sides, the ‘versatile’ ace has scored 31 goals and lad on seven assists.

Leeds are well-stocked in attack but a couple of injuries could easily play into Thomas’ favour, with the forward more than capable of playing in a number of different attacking positions.
