What Leeds United sources are saying about £16m star’s future amid January exit rumours

Daniel Farke prefers a small squad. The German manager likes to keep his group of players small to create a close-knit bond, but also so Leeds United’s players do not become disillusioned.

A squad with 25 players that only play once a week, like Leeds are currently, will cause frustration among the handful of players that are not making the bench. Farke prefers to have a smaller amount available.

Should Leeds follow Nottingham Forest’s path and risk a points deduction? 💸

“This summer, we spent everything we could. Unequivocally, we are maxing PSR out this season. If we had gone on to other targets [on deadline day], the consequences would have been seen in the current roster. More key players from last season would have had to go.”

Perhaps not to the level of Marcelo Bielsa, who would rather a squad of 15 players able to play in two of three positions each. As Farke will know, it is impossible to keep everyone happy. No different at Leeds.

Despite the feel-good factor of five points in three games, there will be players frustrated with their lack of game time. Sebastiaan Bornauw has managed two tiny Premier League cameos since his £5m arrival.

Joel Piroe’s stance on Leeds United exit in the January window

Piroe has failed to start a Premier League game since the 5-0 hammering, and only featured in half of the 16 Premier League games this season. Simply put, Piroe’s game time has completely fallen off a cliff.

This is a player who joined Leeds for £16m in the hope of realising his Premier League dream. While he has done that, he might have thought he’d start games after scoring 19 Championship goals last season.

LeedsUnited.News understand Piroe’s agents are on alert ahead of a move but according to Beren Cross on The Athletic’s site, Piroe is confident that his time will come and is happy to remain patient for now.

The likes of Joel Piroe and Willy Gnonto are struggling to force their way into Farke's plans.

Anything above £6m sees Leeds make a profit on Joel Piroe

Player amortisation means that when a player is signed, the transfer fee spent to acquire their services is spread over the period of the contract for which they have joined. Piroe signed a four-year deal at Leeds.

That was in 2023 and while he did not cost £16m initially, the chances are his add-ons have been met given the goals he’s scored and that Leeds have been promoted. That means, Piroe has cost £4m a year.

When January comes around, Piroe will be two and a half years into his four-year contract, expiring in June 2027. It means anything over £6m would see Leeds make a profit in the eyes of PSR come January.
