It has been two years since Leeds United were forced into the heartbreaking decision to sell Archie Gray to Tottenham Hotspur at the start of the 2024 summer window.
Leeds had just lost the play-off final against Southampton, and failure to secure promotion meant the club needed to sell to avoid Financial Fair Play complications. They had to sell before the deadline.
£20m for Struijk: The best of a bad situation?
After eight years, Struijk is leaving Leeds.
While Leeds would end up selling Glen Kamara, Crysencio Summerville, and Georginio Rutter later on that summer. But before the 30th June FFP deadline, only Gray was generating interest, and he joined Spurs.
That is despite Gray travelling to Brentford and being linked with Aston Villa before Spurs did a deal for Gray, worth £40m. Since leaving Leeds, Gray’s time in North London has been somewhat up and down.
Tottenham make Archie Gray decision amid Leeds interest
With Tottenham doing plenty of business this summer, there might have been an avenue for Gray to leave Spurs and get some game time. Possibly a loan deal, or possibly even a permanent departure.

TeamTalk claim Leeds have been keeping tabs on the England U21 international’s situation at Spurs, who are attempting to bring in Sandro Tonali from Newcastle. Everton, Newcastle and Forest are also keen.
But the same report states that Spurs have made a decision on Gray’s future, and it is that he is not for sale. Indeed, the North London club are not entertaining a loan or a sale and value Gray’s versatility.
Gray’s two years at Tottenham are cause for concern
His first season saw Gray win the Europa League final under Ange Postecoglou, but the midfielder only got game time due to Tottenham’s injuries at centre-back. Rio Ferdinand says he feels sorry for him.

Chelsea have been linked with GG.
This time around, there were points of the season in which Gray was genuinely the best player on the park, especially under Igor Tudor. A masterful display against Atletico Madrid springs to mind for most.
But under Roberto De Zerbi, Gray’s game time dried up with the Italian preferring experience to keep Spurs in the Premier League. With Spurs no longer threatened by relegation, Gray may get game time.
However, without European football, Gray’s game time is going to dry up at Spurs and keeping him in London is only going to risk his development. At this stage, he needs Premier League game time.
