Tottenham looking to sign 24-year-old defender after Leeds United failed to get him in January

Leeds United were linked with a number of defensive signings during the January transfer window.

Having lost Djed Spence and Luke Ayling, Leeds were in need of a new right-back and ended up bringing Connor Roberts in from Burnley on loan for the rest of the season on deadline day.

Prior to Roberts’ arrival, a number of names were mentioned as potential targets and now it is said that Tottenham Hotspur are keen on signing one of them Leeds missed out on.

Leeds had been trying to acquire Ben Johnson on loan from West Ham United but saw their advances turned down, as they looked to re-establish him back as a regular.

However, Johnson is out of contract in the summer and according to Football Transfers, has rejected the offer of two new deals, with Spurs now ready to pounce and bring him to North London.

Spurs want Johnson from West Ham

Back in January, Leeds had been looking to make the most of Johnson’s lack of game time during the first half of the season, and at one stage it had looked like a possibility.

However, after Leeds’ interest, David Moyes started handing Johnson more game time, in which he looked impressive on a few occasions, but his future is back up in the air again.

The 24-year-old has been dropped back down to the bench in recent weeks following a poor run of form in the league with him starting, but that could be pivotal to his future.

As mentioned, negotiations are now at an impasse between Johnson and West Ham and now Spurs could be ready to pounce and bring him in on a free transfer.

If Leeds do get promoted, it would be interesting to see if they re-ignite their interest in Johnson, as he would represent a cheap option with plenty of Premier League experience.
